Raw bananas contain considerable amounts of resistant starch and pectin, which are types of dietary fiber. Raw bananas also helps in absorbing nutrients better, particularly calcium. Good for diabetes or health conscious persons. This savory recipe prepared with raw bananas is a healthy version of the popular street chaat, Dahi vada.
Preparation Time : 30 minutes
Serves : 6-8 persons
Raw banana : 4
Potato : 1
Ginger : 1 tablespoon finely chopped
Gram flour / Besan : 4 tablespoons
Salt to taste
Red chilli powder : 1 teaspoon
Asafoetida / Hing :a pinch
Refined Oil for deep-frying
Dahi / Yogurt : 5 cups beaten
Mint chutney for garnishing
Tamarind chutney for garnishing
Roasted Cumin / Jeera powder : 2 teaspoons
Hot water : 2 litres
Boil the raw banana and potato in pressure cooker for 2 whistles. Let it cool, now peel the banana and potato and grate them using grater.
Add gram flour, salt, 1/4 teaspoon red chilli powder, chopped Ginger and asafoetida to the grated mixture and need it to form a soft dough. Make small round balls and flatten gently or give it your desired shape. Now heat oil in a kadai or pan for deep frying the vadas until light golden brown. Drain excess oil and soak the vadas in hot water in a big bowl for two minutes.
Gently squeeze the vadas with your hands to drain out excess water. Arrange the vadas in single serving plates or a big platter. Pour the beaten yogurt over it. Sprinkle salt to taste. Top with enough mint chutney and tamarind chutney and sprinkle red chilli powder and roasted cumin powder over it.
You Dahi vadas are ready to be served.
* If you wish you can also garnish the Dahi vadas with chopped coriander leaves, chopped green chillies, pomegranate seeds, sev or bhujia.
